The manager of the Watchman mine, Tararu, reports that 868 tons of ore have been crushed for a return of £896 13s Id.

WAIHI.

REPORT TO HEAD OFFICE. (by TELEGRAPH.— correspondent.] Waihi, Thursday. The following cablegram has been despatched to the head office of the Waihi Company:— "No. 10 Level: Empire lode west, 10ft driven, value per ton 12s 6d; Dreadnought, south •branch,. 17ft driven, value per ton 56s 6d. No. 11 Level: Dreadnounght lode west, 20ft driven, value per ton 17s 6d; east, 27ft driven, value per ton 225. THAMES DRAINAGE BOARD. THE VENTILATION DIFFICULTY. [bt telegraph.—own correspondent.] Thames, Thursday. The monthly meeting of the Thames Drainage Board was held yesterday, .Mr. C. Hudson presiding. The report of the engineer detailed the various works carried out, and referred to the fact that the increased flow of water from the working at the 1000 ft level had necessitated tho pumps being worked at an increased speed, which would probably bo permanent in a degree, and would entail more expenditure, as the coal consumption would be greater. Mr. C. Alexander wrote offering to undertake the ventilation of the deep levels on tho suction principle, for which he estimated the cost would be £800. The chairman stated that a proposal had also been made in the same direction by Mr. S. C. Macky, but both proposals were somewhat premature at the present stage, as it was expected tho ventilation at the 1000 ft level would be much improved when the connection was'made with the Waiotahi shaft, and this should be effected during the next few weeks. Mr. Warne, the manager, was called on for his opinion with regard to the ventilation, and said that tho connection with the Waiotahi shaft would improve the ventilation, but there would still be the difficulty of forcing air into the dead ends out of the course of the regular current, which might necessitate a blower being installed at the Waiotahi shaft. He stated that the ventilation of the 1000 ft level was a serious problem, which had given him considerable anxiety so far, as, although there was no dense body of gas at the bottom, still the whole of the air passing along _ the level was heavily impregnated with it, making breathing very difficult in any part of the level.

WAIHI GRAND JUNCTION. The report of the work done at the Wailii Grand Junction mine for the period ended March 21, states Chat No. 4 level, No. 12 winze, on the Martha lode, was sunk 19ft, and produced 28 tons of ore from & width of 36in, worth £2 4s sd. Only the footwall was exposed. In No. 5 level, No. 5 winze, on the Mary lode, 66ft west of north-west crosscut, was sunk 28ft, and produced 33 tons of ore from a width of 40in. It assayed at £1 3s 3d per ton. No. 5 winze, in No. 6 level, was sunk, a further 3ft, making a total depth of 50ft. The oro produced was worth £3 16s 6d. The crosscut at the depth of 50ft was advanced 17ft. Advancing from the footwall, the first 88in assayed £3 15s 6d, and the next 96in, 14s Bd. The hangingwall was not exposed. On the Empire footwall leader, No. 7 winze was sunk 14Jft, making a total of 54Jft. The width exposed in the winze was 34in, and assayed £1 8s 3d. At a depth of 50ft, the crosscut was extended 12ft. The lode was 72in wide, and was worth £1 17s Id. In No. 5 winze, at a depth of 50ft, the crosscut was put in 24ft. From the south side, the first 6ft was worth £7 Is Bd,' the next 9ft (stringers and country rock), 14s 6d. The average of assays taken over a full 27ft was £2 6s. RISING SUN. The manager of the Rising Sun, Owharoa. reports for the week ending May 9, that the contractors extended the drive north on No. J reef a further 9ft, making a total distance of 74ft driven to date. The reef and country rock passed through were much the same as that previously reported. The oro broken carried good values, and was being stacked for treatment. NEW WAITAIA. The rise started from the intermediate level, New Waitaia mine, Kuaotunu, was up lift last week, with a nice, uniform reef, 9in to 12in wide. Fine gold was •showing throughout. On both sides of the rise the reef was much wider. In the north stope, the reef lias mullocky in the face, but continued to show gold freely. In the centre of the block, the reef was 15in to 18in wide and prospected nicely. The stope recently started off the main rise, showed a nice body of ore 2ft wide, in which good dabs of coarso gold could be seen. The north face at the low level was extended 9ft during the week. The corntry was improving, and the quartz was making stronger. TALISMAN. [by TELEGRAPH.— CORRESPONDENT.] Kaiuxgahake, Thursday. The following cablegram has been sent to the head office in London by the Talisman Co. >- "Reef in Woodstock crosscut, from 91 to 98 feet: values low; have reached hangingwall." ..
