CONFERENCE OF SHEARERS.
AMALGAMATION PROPOSALS.
[bt TELEGRAPH.— correspondent.] Wellington, Thursday. The official report of Wednesday's proceedings at the Shearers' Conference was made available to-day. Mr. J. Townsend (Blenheim) was elected vice-president. The actions of the late executive in connection with the watersiders' strike were confirmed. The conference also expressed tho opinion that the course adopted in collecting funds to support those in distress and refusing to call out the shearers and shed hands to engage in a general strike was the right course to follow.
The question of amalgamation with the Australian Workers' Union was discussed at length, and it was decided to seek information from the Labour Department in connection with this matter, and also to get information relative to the amalgamation of the rural workers' unions,, and the Shearers' Association.
After a, discussion in committee it was moved that the question of contract shearin? be left in abeyance until such time as tho position of the New Zealand Shearers' Association in regard to the Australian Workers' Union has been clearly defined.
