THE BIBLE IN STATE SCHOOLS.
Sir,— Averill talked airily at the meeting on Monday evening in the Town Hall about tho "handful of interested opponents" of the programme of the Bible in State Schools League. Catholics are no friends of Godless education—as they have shown not by words or demonstrations." but in a much more practical way. They are, however, determined to' resist any attempt to solve the problem which ignores their religious convictions and inflicts additional injustice upon them. If the Government attempts to introduce religion into the schools on the crude lines suggested by the league, it will probably have reason to rue the day that it was so ill-advised. Religious convictions aro dangerous things to trifle with, therefore, unless this question can be settled in a manner that will give satisfaction to all concerned, it will bo well to " let sleeping dogs lie."
