LAW-BREAKER FINED £40.

Tattmarunti, Thursday. A max named Conrad, alias Seymour, alias .Brown, was convicted at the.Taumanmui Magistrate's Court to-day of illegally selling liquor, and was fined £40 and costs. He was observed by tho police getting off the train at Ongarue on 'tho day of the big native gathering for the dedication of the Roman Catholic Church, carrying a heavy portmanteau. This was found to contain 12 bottles of whisky. Proof was furnished that the same man procured liquor at Kihikihi and Te Awamntu. Accused did not appear.
For advertising liquor for sale in a Taumarunui paper, Mr. Wakeman, proprietor of Em's Hotel, Taihape, was fined 20s and costs. Another firm advertised for sale, a long list of alcoholic liquors in the same paper, but was nob prosecuted. Wakeman's advertisement contained the words "order in time to get delivery before the holidays." This was held to constitute soliciting. The other firm simply gave the. prices of its wares, and added : Provided reasonable time is given, the first train will bo caught with all parcels." It was a question, said the magistrate, of the use of the imperative mood.
