UREWERA LANDS.
DIFFICULTIES IN WAY OF SALE. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Gisborne, Tuesday. Referring to the Urewera Country, the Minister for Native Affairs (Hon. W. H. Herries) made an interesting statement. "We are doing our best to consolidate the interests of the Crown and the purchasers of Crown lands and get them into one block, and until the Crown interests are defined and consolidated it would not be right to open up the Urewera to private individuals."
The Minister went on to say that his Department was unravelling the " tangle" left him by his predecessor respecting the titles, but as soon as the Crown's interests were defined steps would be taken by the Crown to purchase further lands if the natives were willing to sell, and it was possible the Urewera might then be thrown open to • private parties, bat he could not say that for certain just now.
