' The appeal of Sir Stuart Samuel (Liberal M.P. for the Whitechapel division of Tower Hamlets) against the award of £13,000 to a common informer named Mr. J. W. Bird, of Hampstead, being £500 for each vote recorded by the defendant while his firm held a Government contract, has been withdrawn, and the litigation has been settled. Sir Stuart has paid all the costs, ar ' Bird, having vindicated his claim, has agreed to relinquish the amount awarded him.
INDIAN SILVER DEAL. • In consequence of an attempt to make a. corner in silver the Indian Government entered into an arrangement with Messrs. Montague for buying the silver required at- an ordinary market price. Sir Stuart being a partner in the firm, the question was raised whether he had not infringed some old statutes regarding; contractors. It was deemed necessary. that he . should vacate his seat for WhitechaneL and. he accordingly did so, being re-elected-. The orders from the India Office extended from March 4 to September 11, 1912.
