BETTER ROADS.

NEW LYNN IMPROVEMENTS. MODIFIED SCHEME ADOPTED EXPENDITURE OF £10,000. The members of the New Lynn Town. Board recently decided on a progressive policy of streets improvement for their district, and the consulting engineer (Mr. L. Gannon) was instructed to submit a scheme to the board. Accordingly the engineer drew up a comprehensive scheme, involving an expenditure of £24,000 on the streets. At the same time he pointed out that the raising of such a large loan was probably beyond the present resources of the district, and he had, therefore, divided the district into four areas, so that expenditure could be modified in each area, to come within any sum that might be deemed suitable for present requirements. While the board recognised that the scheme was thoroughly complete the opinion prevailed that it was at present beyond the capacity of the district. In company, therefore, with the members of the board, the engineer made a further complete tour of the district, with the object of preparing a modified scheme for the improvement of the New Lynn roads. As a result Mr. Gannon has now submitted a scheme involving an expenditure of £10,000.

In his report on the modified proposals the engineer states that he prepared details with a view to spending the money most economically, and with the greatest advantage to the district. By means of the scheme he was submitting practically every dedicated road in New Lynn would be improved. The detailed nature of the work, though modified, would be similar to that provided in the original scheme. It is proposed that the following amounts snail be spent in the various areas : —Area No. 1, Hetana Hamlet, £1800; No. 2, northern portion of the district, £2500 No. 3, south-east Dortion of the district, £2500; No. 4, Great North Road, as far as Margan Avenue, including a portion of Titixangi Road, £3200: total, £10,000. The above estimates included the. cost for culverting, storm-water drainage, and engineering. At a special meeting of the Town Board on Wednesday evening it was decided to adopt the modified scheme as submitted. The scheme is to be placed before the ratepayers before the date of taking a poll for the raising of the loan is fixed
