UNLUCKY IMPERATOR.
DAMAGE BY A GALE. BOATS CARRIED AWAY. By Telegraph— Association— New Yokk, March 19. The Hamburg-Amerika liner Imperator (50,000 tons) has arrived at New York after a stormy voyage. Four of her lifeboats were carried off by a heavy gale, while much damage was done to her bows. UNDER AN UNLUCKY STAR. The giant German liner seemß to have been launched under an evil star. As she was proceeding down the Elbe on her maiden voyage she grounded, and was not refloated for some time. Hardly had the builders got the vessel ready for her first voyage when an explosion in the stokehold caused the loss of several lives. On top of this, workmen caused great damage to the priceless pictures and decorations aboard, while liquid cement was poured down the pipes. An official denial was given to this last story, but there is little doubt as to its general truth. As the Imperator was lying in dock at New York at the conclusion of her first voyage across the " pond," flames broke out in the steerage quarter, and before these were extinguished some people were burned to death. The damage sustained was so serious that the vessel was out of commission for some time.
