CRY FOR MORE SHIPS.
•INADEQUATE ESTIMATES." WORLD-WIDE SERVICE. Times and Sydney Sun Services. London, March 19. The Navy League regards the Naval Estimates as inadequate, and declares that, unless the anticipated Canadian ships are replaced, Britain will not have in 1915 a single capital ship available for worldwide service, while it will be impossible in 1916 to keep up Britain's proportionate strength in the Mediterranean.
DEFENCE OF THE PACIFIC. THE COAL OF AUSTRALASIA. Sydney, March 20. The Herald, commenting on Mr. Churchill's speech in the House of Commons, says:—"The Admiralty believes that a strong squadron, based on Gibraltar, would prove sufficient to protect the Pacific. We must be pardoned for ruling that squadron out of existence so far as the Pacific is concerned. A dozen British battleships could not suddenly be withdrawn from Home waters. "When the day comes when a British fleet must again be established in the Pacific, it will be established only on the condition that a substantial portion of the fleet—ships, bases, personnel, and organ—already exists on the spot. That is the object towards which New Zealand and Australia are working. We want to help to thresh out a common plan for the future defence of the Pacific."
