The autumn championship tournament, which has just been completed in Melbourne, furnished some very fine contests, notably in the men's championship singles, in which the evergreen Rice defeated Heath most decisively. The Australian critics find themselves in somewhat of a quandary lover the -result, for, according to all opinions, Heath has for some time been playing in magnificent form, whilst Rite has had little or' rib hard practice since he returned from the Davis Cup trip. Even Brookes."wag so struck with Heath's play that he was somewhat sorry that he was not one of the Davis Cup team which is now on its way to Europe. Now comes the shock of his defeat by Rice, for if Heath has reached such ' heights, what position does Rice hold? It must be admitted that the Sydney man, notwithstanding his 40 years, is a very dangerous opponent, and although his form may not always be sustained he so often rises to great., heights, and on -more than one occasion has upset calculations. His great win against C. P.' Dixon in the Victorian championship will be remembered, and although one likes to see the younger players coming to the' front the continued success of such veterans as Rice must not be over- i looked".'"The men's" doubles championship! also provided play of a high standard, the finalists being Lycett and Heath and P. O'Hafa Wood and Cfmpbell. The latter pair put up a 'great fight to the end of the third set, but Wood did no finish as well as' was expected, and victory went to LycetFand Heath at the end of five sets: 6—B, 7—5, B—lo, 6—l, 6—4. In the combined event P, Wood and Miss Waxman reached the final- against Lycett and Miss Qyton. As in the doubles, Wood opened brilliantly, taking the first set 6—3, and 4fter getting* a lead of 4—2 in the second, eased up, with, _ the . result that his opponents took the'second and third sets and the championship','6—4, 6—2. While on his' way to Europe Brookes took advantage of the call 'at Fremantle to run up to Perth, and have hit up against E. F. Parker, the West Australian champion. The weather was excessively hot, and neither flayer was out to fully, extend himself* The champion held his opponent comfortably, winning the first two sets with' something to spare. The third'set was more keenly contested, and went to 6—5 in Brookes's favour- Of the total games played,. Brookes, won 28, while 17 were secured by Parker. Brookes hopes to reach the Rjviefa' in time to compete at the Beau, Site meeting at the end of this month.
