RESULT OF GALE.

SHIPPING DELAYED.

The heavy • gale which prevailed throughout the North Island on Monday and Tuesday was responsible for several steamers being delayed, while some experienced a rough handling on the East

Coast. The Huddart-Parker steamer Westralia, did not .reach Auckland until an early hour this morning from Southern ports, over 24 hours later than her usual time. The Westralia left Wellington on Monday evening fpr Napier, and arrived at that port on Tuesday afternoon after a very rough passage. Owing to the heavy rain, she was unable to work cargo there on Tuesday, and consequently was several hours late in arriving at Gisborne, which port she cleared shortly before midnight on Wednesday for Auckland. The collier Ngatoro, which arrived at Auckland early yesterday morning from Greymouth and New Plymouth, met the full force of the gale when off the northern coast. The worst of the storm was encountered on Monday, and the Ngatoro shipped, considerable quantities of water. The weather improved on Tuesday morning, but a dense fog was then met, which necessitated speed being reduced, while frequent soundings had to be taken. The Union Co.'s steamer Wanaka, which left Lyttelton at 6 p.m. on Monday for Auckland direct, has also been delayed on the passage. Under ordinary conditions, the Wanaka was due here last night, but as she was only reported off the East Cape at 2.30 p.m. yesterday, she cannot arrive until about noon to-day.
