Missionaries repon; that durirg the pillage of Lah'o-kou by the " White Wolves,'* the brigands killed 1500 people and wounded 4000 more. Hideous tortures were inflicted on many men in order to compel them to deliver up hidden valuables. Every woman and girl seen by the brigands was ravished, and many were mutilated and murdered. Property valued at £1,000,000 was looted. The country folk are too terrified to give information to the proper authorities.
