[from ODE OWN COEBESPONDENTS-l TE AROHA. OPEN BICYCLE RACE. The open bicycle race held on Saturday under the auspices of the Te Aroha Cycling Club, was won by C. Everitt, the scratch man, and he also recorded the fastest time, lh 42m. The other placed competitors finished as follows :—G. Cain, lh 51m Is, 2: A. Mason, lh 59m 30s. 3: and W. Runciman,, 2h 5m 30s, 4. The race started from the Hamilton East Post Office and finished at Ivanhoe. Te Aroha. The death of Mr. 0. Manuel, chairman of the Piako County Council, occurred at his residence, Motumaoho, Morrinsville,on Saturday afternoon. Mr. Manuel has been a member of the Piako County Council for some 8i years, during three of which he occupied the position of chairman. For three years he was a member of the Thames Harbour Board, and for six years he was on the board of the Waikato Hospital. A party of three local gentlemen, consisting of Messrs. H. Taylor, Rodgers, and H. Johnson, had an unenviable experience in the overturning and sinking of a launch, in which they were making for their moorings at 11 a.m. on Sunday. It appears that when the launch got into the strong current she would not answer to her helm, and she was swept across the river into the willows. At this juncture the occupants made good their safety by climbing on to' the willows. The launch eventually turned over and sank in 7ft of water. While Mr. Herbert, of Te Aroha, was travelling on a motor-cycle, attached to a side-car, past Messrs. Gordon and Sweeney's stables, Whittaker Street, part of the mechanism failed, and in trying to get past one of Messrs. Gordon and Sweeney's brakes the bicycle dashed into it. Mr. Herbert luckily escaped serious injuries, but the bicycle and side-car were less fortunate.
