London, March 10. The first appearance of the gun for use against air craft by the British fleet was made yesterday by the Iron Duke which is going an manoeuvres to test two.guns throwing a high explosive shell of 121b weight, and with an effective range of 7000 yds. Even if the aeroplane was not hit, it is believed that the explosion in the aircraft's vicinity would be sufficient to bring it down. The Iron Duke is also introducing a 6in anti-torpedo battery. The best battleships are dispensing with the net for defence against torpedoes, known as the crinoline. This net is easily penetrated, and against the latest, torpedoes it is useless and obsolete.
The bluejackets do not regret the change, - because "put-nets" is an unpopular order, involving a laborious task.
