VALUATION DEPARTMENT.

NEW OFFICE AT WHANGAREI.

[by TELEGRAPH.—OWN? CORRESPONDENT.]

W hangarej, Friday. I A deputation waited upon the ValuerGeneral (Mr. F. W. Flanagan) yesterday a:, the County Chambers, and urged sihat a branch office of the Valuation Department should be opened in Whangarei. In reply, Mr. F.anagan reminded the deputationists that the matter was not a new one, and further he repeated an announcement already made that the application was shortly to be granted. Proceeding, he stated that when the office was opened certificates of value would not be issued locally, but as Auckland was not far away the amount of inconvenience would be infinitesimal. He also pointed out that the business of the northern counties, Bay of Islands, and Mangonui, did not come through Whangarei, and therefore the establishment of an office similar to the bigger centres was not justified. Air. F.anagan said that he did not approve )f the appointment of an officer from one of the other local departments, as the appointee would have to give ail his time "o the oik and the advantage of having an independent officer would be that any information in regard to advances to settlers advances to workers, and native lands' would at any time be available. He added that county valuations recorded would also be available.
