The usual monthly meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council was held on lhursday, Mr. H. M. Corbett presiding. lenders were accepted as follows : —forming and cul verting 30 chains of Farrellv's Road, Waikino, F. J. Butcher, . £36; trimming and metalling 17 chains. Hikutaia Settlement Road. F. M. Donnelly, £101 8s : making up formation and metalling 30 chains, Paeroa-Waitoa Road, G. Carrick, £130; supply and delivery of 435vds of metal on Mill Road, G. 'Carrick, "£200; forming and adverting chains, PaeroaTe Aroha New Road, G. W. Smallman, £172; improving, deepening, and widening Opukeko drain. T. Lupis, £115 ; building two small buildings in iron and concrete, one at - aeroa and one at Earangahake, P. Sheehan, £96 10s. A deputation of settlers waited on the council with a request for a new road to be made from Te Puke to Komata, to connect with the road through Hubbard's Estate, and also asked that the council expend a Government grant of £100, that is available for such a road. The council instructed the engineer to report on the matter. It was agreed to contribute the sum of £10 10s towards the guarantee required by the Post and Telegraph Department to lay a telephone line to Waihi Beach. A vote of £25 was granted towards the funds of the Paeroa Domain Board. It was decided to again ask the Waihi Gold Mining Company to state the terms on which it would, be prepared to supply electric current in the district. The engineer reported that the cost of laying larger water mains in Paeroa. as required, would be £2470. Consideration of the matter was postponed. The Finance Committee's report showed the overdraft to be £10,939 2s, and that receipts last "month amounted to £461 3s Id.

HUNTLY. DEATH OF ESTEEMED RESIDENT. Great sympathy is expressed with, the widow and family (three daughters) of the ' late Mr. Alexander Reid, who died somewhat suddenly and unexpectedly in the Waikato Hospital, Hamilton, this week at the earlv age of 39. Deceased, who came from Darly, Scotland, some five years ago, ■ was highly esteemed by all who knew him.

At a meeting of the Huntly Scots Society, under the presidency of the chief (Dr. R. C. Macdiarmid) it was decided to donate six guineas to the sports fund as prizes for a piping competition. At a special meeting held on Wednesday evening a vote of condolence arid sympathy was ordered to be sent to the widow ana family of the late Mr. Alex. Reid.

The Hibernian Society, at its fortnightly meeting, resolved that as the society was in its infancy, and funds were low, the members regretted that they could not furnish prizes for the Irish jig competition at the sports- An amount of routine business was got through, and it was decided to start the debat ina society connected with the branch in May next. The weekly meeting of the Sports Committee was held, and preliminary work in connection with the gathering was dealt with. The secretaries reported donations in cash, and in the form of trophies, totalling £60. The entries were expected to be larcre. while good prizes and keen competition were anticipated. CLEVEDON. TENNIS TOURNAMENT. The Managing Committee of the Clevedon Lawn Tennis Association. Clevedon, has decided to hold the annual tournament this year on the I'apakura courts on March 14 and 28, and April 4. A new piece of road has been formed round the beach between the Maraetai Nos. 1 and 2 schools, for the use of riders and pedestrians generally. This will be greatly to the advantage of the school children, who frequently had to ride through the surf on their way to and from school. The Presbyterian Bible-class holds its annual picnic on Wednesday, March 1?., and intends visiting Motutapu in the s.s. Hirere. A very la-ge party of picknickers came from Brookbv last week and spent a long day on Miraetai Beach, the weather being perfect. A fishing excursion in the harbour was also held, visitors coming in to join it from outlying districts. Mr. M. 0. Eyre, of East Road, has disposed of his property, and is shortly leaving the district. .Another new house is being built in the township, and there is yet another to follow shortly. Rain is very much needed. Tanks are very low, or empty, and the pastures are looking brown. MOKAI. VALEDICTORY SOCIAL. A very pleasant evening \va.< spent in the Mokai District Hall, when a social and dance was held to bid farewell to Mr. and Airs. \\ . Patterson, junr., on the eve of their depaiture for the King Country. Mr. and Mrs.. Patterson have been residents at. Mokai for the last eight years. Mr. Phelan, mill manager, presented Mr. and Mrs. Patterson with a travelling bag and ladies' dressing case. Mr. Phelan said, in pre enting these tokens of esteem, that great regret was felt at their departure, and that all good wishes would go with them for their future success in life.
