WEALTHY LADY SUED.
SENSATIONAL TRIAL.
VERDICT FOR THE DEFENCE.
By Telegraph.—Press Association—Copyright
London, March 4An cx-couvict named Hugh Dairy 111 pie to-day sued the Baroness von Goetz, a wealthy philanthropist and the organiser of a farm for discharged prisoners. Dalrymple alleged that he had lent the baroness money, and produced scores of letters, said to be from the defendant, and containing endearing messages.
In a sensational cross-examina-tion counsel proved that Dalrymple had been convicted of frauds upon women in 1896. In order to explain discrepancies in the letters, Dalrymple alleged that his brother was responsible.
Dalrymple's counsel finally threw up his brief, and a verdict for the defence was given.
The Judge impounded 100 letters, which are said to be obvious forgeries. The evidence showed that the baroness had £40,000 in the bank at the time Dalrymple maintained he was in correspondence with her regarding money matters.
