TRADE WITH AMERICA

QUESTION OF FREIGHTS.

UNION COMPANY APPROACHED.

THE WELLINGTON CONFERENCE.

Thf conference held at Wellington cm Tuesday between the Prime Minister, representatives of the Auckland and Wellington Chambers of Commerce, and reprewntativea of the Union Steam Ship Company in connection with the carriage of dairy produce to Vancouver and San Francisco, was attended by Mr. H. E. Paeey.

Mr. Pacey returned to Auckland yesterday afternoon. While all that transpired at the conference could not yet be divulged he could say that as a result of the conference the Union Company afterwards received a deputation of the Chamber of Commerce delegates in order to discu.«« details. The deputation, Mr. Pacey stated, emphasised the need for cheaper freight. A suggestion was made that a flat rate of 4s 3d per box for butter tent both to Vancouver and San Fftni isco should be charged. It waa pointed out to the company that at the present time it was possible to deliver butter at a Hat rate of 4s 3d to Boston and New York, via London, from any grading port in New Zealand. The journey direct from New Zealand to the Pacific coast was \ °.ry much shorter, and therefore the deputation urged that the rate should certainly not be more, as it was at present, than the rate charged via London. By the adoption of the flat rate of 4s 3d per box of butter the coastal charge of id per lb on butter would be abolished for both tho San Francisco and Vancouver services, so that all New Zealand exporters, wherever resident, would receive the same advantages. The Union Company is now considering the representations made by the deputation.
