BETTER STREETS.

WORK FOR COMING YEAR.

EXPENDITURE OF £28,850.

New footpaths, aide channels and kerbs, in 34 secondary streets, to cost altogether £28,850, were approved for construction by the City Council last night. The Works Committee recently made a tour of inspection of the streets concerned, and the works selected for attention during the coming year were reported upon to the council by the engineer. The streets, and the amounts allocated to be expended on them, are as follows: —

The Mayor said the streets named in the list were all on the schedule of. streets made out for improvement. This list had been made to include the streets which were considered to be the worst and the most in need of repair. In reply to a councillor who had named another street as requiring repair, he said tint the engineer had several other streets — or seven—under consideration. If councillors had pressing wants of the kind to submit they could bring their claims forward. Mr. Trevethick: I have eight! Mr. Entrican: Too many! You can't monopolise the business like that ! The Mayor said the idea was to put all their streets into good order without going into any complicated engineering. It would be very satisfactory if the streets were finished within the next 12 months. The report was adopted.
