METHODIST CONFERENCE.
THE LIQUOR QUESTION.
[BY TELEGRAPH.—r-RESS ASSOCIATION.] Dr/NEDIN, Wednesday. A retort -was received by the Methodist Conference from the committees on temperance and public morals, and resolutions were adopted in regard to Sabbath observance, the liquor problem, and industrial unrest. It was resolved to express regret that the Government did not afford an opportunity last session for amending the three-fifths provision of the licensing law, and to ask that steps be taken to have the proposed Bill passed into law as early as possible. The gambling question was considered and a resolution adopted condemning the totalisator and deprecating the recent attempt to increase the number of totalisator permits.
Mr. J. Flesher spoke of the difference between the Church records of Methodist members and the numbers shown as Church members by the last census. The Rev. W. Dawson said he had paid a great deal of attention to this question, and he would suggest a means of tracing those not within the influence of the Church. The report' showed an inexplicable decrease of 3669 in the number of adherent*, whereas formerly the Church return approximated to the census figures.
