ANTARCTIC DIARIES.

RELICS OF CAPTAIN SCOTT. IrHOM OtTR OWfT COBKESPOKDEOT.] London, January 21. Until Peter Scott, the only son of the explorer, is 21 years of age, the original! journals of Captain Scott will remain in: the British Museum, where they wereon view on Saturday. Amongst the sheets at present on view is that on which the dead explorer interrupted the even courses of his narrative to print in capitals "The) Pole," and that— more interesting— upon which he has written in largf; let--ters " Last Entry," and " For God's saka look after our people." The '* t's " are still crossed, but there is no apostrophe, and the last word, people," is written with the effort of all—the last word, in fact, of a man in extremis, whose pen has just held out to the end. Another portion of the diaries which is of special public interest is the message to; the public:—" Surely a great, rich coun-< try like ours will see that those who are* dependent upon ns are properly provided! for.—R. Scott, 25th March, 1912." Th© message to the public is written at theend of one of the volumes and on one oC the boards, and is without erasure, iis the firrn, small writing characteristic ofr the diaries throughout. For wheat a firmly compacted seed bed, with two or three inches of loose soil on the surface, is.better than an extremely; mellow soil. This is because wheat is usu-i ally sown in-a dry period, when moisture, > :",' must be retained to the greatest extent pos- < : sible. It is advisable to plough for wneatf ' ' as early as possible, and then give con-, stant cultivation to ' fine and firm thysciL* as well as to destroy the weeds. - " L • " ■
