PERSONAL ITEMS.

Mr. Hugh Momhson, of Wairarapa, is at present on a' visit to Auckland. He is staying a the Grand Hotel. Th? Hon. D. Buddo, M.P. for Kaiapoi, who has been soruo weeks in Australia, left, Melbourne a few days ago on a trip to England. He will return to New Zealand about the beginning of next session.

The Hon. W. H. Hemes (Minister for Hallways) loaves Wellington by the Main Trunk express to-day for Palmorston North and Foxton, to inquire into various matters of railway administration. He will return to Wellington to-morrow evening.

.Among (he examiners recently appointed by the Senate (if the University of New Zealand for the Bachelor of Commerce degree and accountancy professional examinations for 1914, are Mr. J. A. Duncan and Mr. Q. ('. Oorrie, both of Auckland.

The Prime Minister (the Right Hon. W. F. Massoy) intends to make a trip to the West Coast and overland to Christchurch shortly. Ho will leave Wellington at the end of this week or possibly early la next week. Later Mr. Massey is to lour the North Auckland district.

Mr. G. Hogben, Inspector-General of Schools, who has been spending a portion of his holiday leave in Auckland, left for 'la Kuiu by the Main Trunk express last night. Mr. Hogben will spend about a fortnight in the vicinity of the King Country centre at his son's farm.

Miss Helen F. Barnes, national travelling secretary of the Young Women's Christian Association, will arrive in Auckland tomorrow morning. Miss Barnes will spend a week in Auckland before proceeding to America. Reforo her return site will take part in the world's Y.W.C.A. conference to bo held at Stockholm in June.

Mr. George George, director of technical education and manual instruction in Auckland, left for Wellington by the Main Trunk express last night. Mr. George will give evidence before the Arbitration Court in the southern city regarding the technical training of plumbers' apprentices. He expects to bo absent from Auckland for a few days.

The Rev. J. R. Jeffries, Presbyterian minister at St. Andrew's, lias decided to accept a call from the Auckland Social Service Association. The South Canterbury Presbytery, at a meeting at Tima.ru yesterday, endorsed the regret of the St. Andrew congregation at losing his services. —Press Association.

Father Golden, of the Sacred Heart Church, Ponsonby, left by the steamer Victoria yesterday for Gisborne, where he will take charge of the parish ' during Father Lane's absence in Europe, Father O'.Ualley has been transferred from St. Patrick s Cathedral to Ponsonby to fill the vacancy caused by Father Golden's depar- , ture.

. Earl Grey and Countess Grey were the guests of the Hon. Jaa. Allen, at Dunedin, yesterday. They spent a busy day inspecting various institutions and manufacturing establishments. The Earl and Countess leave'for'Christchnrch to-day where they will be the guests of Mr. A. E. Rhodes. Lady Sybil Grey left Dunedin by the second train yesterday and proceeds direct to Welf lington and tnenco to Taupe-.— Association. '

An old and respected colonist in the .person of Mr'. Thomas Whiteley passed away at his 'residence, Commercial Road ArtnhiU yesterday. He arrived in Auck-' land .50 years ago fast January % in the passenger ship Victory. He, was an expert fit staircase building and at special joinery work and was employed on many important buildings in the early days. The late- '.Mr., Whiteley, was twice married. , He leaves'a widow, a son, Mr. T. Whiteley of Manchester, England, and a daughter, Mro Jucker, of Switzerland. .The funeral will .take place at Purewn. cemetery to-morrow. . , ' •
