AQUATICS.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. . With reference to the old yacht Mari■tana, now being stripped of her lead and gear at Nelson, many happy recollections are recalled of this well-known Auckland boat's cruises along the Northern coast in the early days, and also her victory in the Queen's Jubilee race. Thirty competitors, took part in this celebrated race, which was for a cup presented by John Marshall, and a purse of sovereigns. The crew of the yacht consisted of Darby Ryan, Will Speight, Albert Spencer, Walter Winks, Alf. Clark, George Gilmour, and the owner, Captain Vereker Bindon. The North Shore Aquatic and Advancement Association, recently formed at Devonport with the object of beautifying the borough" and assisting the local council, is making energetic strides. A public meeting was held at Stanley Bay, the residents there taking the objects up with keen enthusiasm. A strong committee to look after the interest* at that end of the

borough has been set up, consisting of Messrs. E.' Sheppherd, C. J. Smith, J. Parker, E. Jones, and J.. P. Kalaugher. The president of the association in his remarks mentioned that owing to operations of the association several residents have given practical examples of their support to the association's objects by regit larly mowing the grass on the streets opposite their properties, thus assisting in a small manner, with a good effect. A public meeting was also held at Cheltenham Beach last evening. There was a good attendance of residents, and the enthusiasm shown augers well for another meeting to be held there at an early date, when it is hoped to form a committee to interest the residents at that locality. The association is holding a grand concert in the parish hall this (Wednesday) evening, for the purpose of raising funds to hold a monster carnival later on in the year.. The programme, advertised in the amusement column, promises to be the best ever held in Devonport, and includes in the contributing artists Auckland's leading vocalists and musicians.

-' A general meeting of the association will ho field shortly to go into the question of organising the proposed carnival, and it is anticipated that some definite scheme will be entered upon. Tenders are being called for the supply of native trees to be planted in" the various streets of the borough. This will be done by free labour offering from the members and residents. As the objective of the association is so beneficial to the interests of the residents the success of its endeavours should be assured by the support of every resident in Devonport.
