RESTLESS RANGITIKEI.

FARMING LAND SWEPT AWAY.

COUNCIL'S BIG SCHEME/

[BY tele&raph.—own

Palmebston North, Friday. Fob many years past, the Rangitikei River has been a source of trouble to the County Council, and a menace to settlers, as, in addition to sweeping away roads, it has destroyed many hundreds of acres of most valuable land.

About 26 years ago the river swept away a great slice of the main road, and, in consequence, protective works had to be erected. These, with intermittent repairs, have stood till recently, but the position is now so serious that, according to Mr. Mair, county engineer, settlers are almost daily losing valuable land, whilst their homes are. in,constant danger. He suggests an important work by means of cuts, but before any . definite decision is taken he' suggests that the Government engineers be asked to report upon the project, If, as he thinks, the river can be straightened, it will serve as a port for the shipment of produce by craft of small tonnage. Acting on this suggestion, the council .decided to ask the Minister for Public Works to give the services of an experienced engineer to furnish a report on the matter.
