BOXES FOR DAIRY PRODUCE
AN IMPORTANT INDUSTRY. [BY telegkaph.—own correspondent.] Wanganui, Friday. The butter box and cheese crate making industry is attaining big proportions, as a result of the dairy industry in Taranaki, and the extensiveness of it is reflected in the operations of the Eltham Box Company. The chairman of the company, Mr. Jacob Marx, said that for the first six months of the season, ending January 31, the company has turned out 10,000 more butter boxes and 80,000 more cheese crates than for the similar period last year. The boxes despatched from the factory were sufficient to hold 900,0001b of dairy produce.
"These were sent to Taranaki factories only," added Mr. Mars, "which gives Auckland something to beat." The directors this week paid a visit to the Taurewa Block of 25,000 acres, near Taumarunui, over which the company has the timber rights. The preliminary steps for the laying of several miles of steam tramways were taken, but it is not anticipated that cutting operations will be commenced for several years, until the timber in the Utiku Block is nearly exhausted.
