PORT OF WHANGAREI.
A COMPREHENSIVE REPORT.
DEEPER CHANNEL WANTED.
RECLAMATION SUGGESTED.
[bt telegraph.—own
Whanoabei, Friday. At a meeting of the. Whan'garei > Harbour Board to-dAy the engineer, Mr. J. S. McAver, submitted a comprehensive report on the proposed harbour improvements, involving an expenditure of £70,000. The chief feature.' of the scheme is t«( nlake a direct channel to the Town Wharf with 16ft of water at Tow tide, in order that vessels up to 4000 tons register may berth in the heart of the town -
This will involve the reclamation of 254 acres of mangrove flats, which at present are in an unindated condition at high water. Provision is also made for a turning basin of eight acres opposite the Town Wharf, and tho acquisition of all pri-vately-owned wharves within the harbour. The report was adopted. The opinion of the members of the board was that it would be premature. to submit the scheme to the ratepayers of the district in order to jot their authority for the large loan which would be necessary to carry the proposals into effect. For the present the board mtends to continue the work of dredging the Whangarei River in order that small vessels may trade to the town wharf at any state of the tide.
