ROWING.
NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. The New Zealand rowing championship meeting and Maori aquatic carnival at Mercer to-day is attracting considerable attention, and it is expected that large crowds will leave Auckland by special trains this morning for the " Henley of New Zealand." Local crews have been training hard for the championship events, and on the form shown during the week several championships should be necured. The Wanganui Union Club has some powerful crews engaged, and as their training work has been of a high order, the contests with the local crews should be worth going a long way to see. Maori canoe racing is always interesting, and this year quite a large number of canoe events figure on the programme. Full particulars regarding special trains will be found in our advertising columns. SOMERVILLE SHIELD. A large crowd witnessed the trial spin of the Auckland eight last evening. Considerable improvement was noticeable, and supporters of the club are now confident that their representatives will put up a big fight on Saturday. The crew rowed 32 to the minute last evening, and the work all round impressed the onlookers. Good reports are to hand about the Wanganui crew, and with conditions neutral Saturday's contest should be a memorable one.
