THE EAST COAST RAILWAY.
I " When the . Public Works Estimates passed.through the House of Representatives the Minister excused the inadequacy of the vote for the Waihi end of the East Coast Railway by undertaking that the Department would endeavour to expend the whole of the £10,000 by March 31. No effort has yet been made to redeem that promise or to resume in any way the work which was so inexcusably dropped when Mr- Fraser took ; office. The approach of the holidays may have provided the Department with a reason for not manning the Waihi end of the line in December. But what can be said for their inaction continuing throughout ' January when the weather is favourable and men ■■ are available for the work ?' Two good months have passejf since the railway votes were allocated, and only two more have to go before Mr.' Fraser can be called upon to explain in detail what he has done'in fulfilment of his promise to expend' money on the Waihi end of the East Coast Railway at the rate of £40,000 a year. In the interests of the Reform Party and the Government which he represents it is to be hoped that he will be able to completely answer all inquiries Iby pointing to satisfactory work accomplished from. Waihi towards ; Tgnrariga. • :
