THE DRAINAGE SCHEME.
new System almost READY.
IN USE TWO MONTHS HENCE.
There is every probability that, the new I drainage system will be in operation within I two months. The various works under the i control of the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board have made such good progress that it is fully expected the greater portion of the city and several of the suburbs will, some time in March next, be utilising the new service with its outlet at Orakei.
The board's engineer (Mr. W. E. Bush) states that the main sewer has been completed from Orakei to Cox's Creek. Also the following branch sewers are now in readiness for the reception of sewage:— Kemuera, Newmarket, One-tree Hill, Archhill, a portion of Mount Albert, and Mount Eden. The Archhill section was the first to be finished a few years ago. Branches nearing completion include one in Ponsonby, which will take about three months, and the second Mount Eden branch, to serve portion of that borough and the Dominion Road district. This latter is nearing completion now. The only branch sewers yet to be constructed are the one to serve that portion of Mount Eden abutting upon Mount Roskill, and the continuation of the main sewer beyond Cox's Creek, which, incidentally, will receive the drainage from the Mental Hospital. The buildings at the storage tanks at Orakei will be ready within two or three weeks, and the installation of the requisite l machinery will quickly follow. When that has been installed it will be possible, Mr Bush states, to connect the reticulation of all the districts mentioned with the board's system, provided that such reticulation is in a sufficiently forward condition.
