STABBING AFFRAY SEQUEL.

CHINAMAN VINDICATED.

[bt telegraph.—press association.] Blenheim, Friday. The sequel to the sensational stabbing affray in the pit lobby of His Majesty's Theatre on the night of January 5. took place in the Magistrate's Court to-day, when an elderly Chinaman named Chow Lei was charged with stabbing Percy Maddock in several places with a pocket knife. Maddock was also charged with assaulting the Chinaman by striking him on the neck. The magistrate deprecated the use of the knife, but took into consideration the fact that the Chinaman was peeling an apple at the time he was assaulted by Maddock, and that he was grossly and repeatedly provocated by Maddock, who struck him a number of times, finally knocking him down, apparently without cause. The Chinaman was acquitted, and the magistrate strongly condemned the action of Maddock, and fined him £10 and £2 5s 3d costs.
