NAVAL AND MILITARY.
MR. ALLEN INTERVIEWED.
RECENT AUCKLAND TOURNAMENT
[BY telegbaph.—-press association.]
Dtjnedin, Friday. Interviewed in Tegard to naval matters the Minister for Defence, the Hon. James Allen, said the man to be appointed commander of the Philomel will be of such a capacity as to be competent to advise the Cabinet on all naval matters, just as MajorGeneral Godley advises it in regaixl to military matters. He will also be a suitable person to command a training ship. The appointment rests 'with the Admiralty. The public, the Minister went on to remark did not realise fully the importance of the recent military tournament at Auckland. Colonel Heard and Major-General Godley had reported thereon, and he was much impressed with the face that both reported in the most satisfactory terms. ColonefHeard's message was quite inspiriting, more especially as he was not a man to pay compliments or say anything in praise of the men unless he really meant it. For him to state as lie did that New Zealand might well be proud of the splendid material at hand, was a great compliment indeed.
Mr. Allen added that Major-General Godley fully confirmed these statements, while the officer in charge of the senior cadets, hundreds of whom were present said that the discipline was excellent. No word of complaint had been made against a single boy.
