CANTEEN CONTRACTS.
SCANDAL DEVELOPMENTS. By Telegraph—Press Association— (Received January 9. 6 p.m.) London, January 8. In connection with the canteen contract scandals, 16 summonses have been granted for hearing on the 17th. The names of the defendants have been withheld. A secret inquiry has been proceeding for months past at the War Office. It was set up by the Secretary for War (Colonel Seely). Major-General J. S. Cowans, Quartermaster-General of the Forces, has presided. The sittings have been private, but the main allegation is well known. It is that some of the firms contracting for the supply of regimental messes and canteens obtained their orders by the bribery, direct or indirect, of those whose business it is to look after the supplies.
