CASES OF INTEMPERANCE.
The majority of the cases heard at the Police Court yesterday before Mr. F. V. Frazer, S.M., were the outcome of overindulgence in liquor.
" I only put my head inside the. door to see a man who owed mo 305," said Andrew Clive, who was charged with entering licensed premises while prohibited. " I was wiping my nose when I came out," he continued, " and the constable thought I was wiping my mouth.'' He was fined £1, or three days'.
An old man named John Redmond O'Donoghue. when charged with having been drunk while prohibited, said that he did not remember having had a drink. He expressed a desire to go to Wellington, and so he was convicted and ordered to come Up for sentence when called upon provided that he left for Wellington today. James McConnell, charged wrtfl two breaches of his prohibition order, said that he had been remanded in custody for seven days, and had served 48 hours for drunkenness in connection with the present charges Hr promised to leave for the country on Tuesday, and on that understanding he was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called on Francis Michael Molloy. virle drunk on Thursday, amused himself by throwing stones at the door of C. E. Molloy's house, but his aim was bad, and a stone went through a window, doing damage to the extent of £1. He. was convicted and prohibited, and ordered to pay for the damage.
William Theodore Hukstep was convicted and prohibited for intemperance and a charge of vagrancy against him was withdrawn.
James McQuoid was fined £1, with an alternative of three days' imprisonment lor breaking his prohibition order. Annie Dunne, who had been on remand in custody for a week, was convicted and discharged for breaking her prohibition order. r
Sarah Dennis made her third appearance for drunkenness this month "You are starting the New Year badly." re marked His Worship, who prohibited the woman and sent her to gaol for three davs James AlcHale was fined 10s for' a second offence, and two first offenders were each fined ss.
Three deserters from the Hurunui James M^' 11 ' Thomas Ta^art and Frederick Martin, were remanded for n week in order that the captain 0 the vessel might say what he wanted to do with them.
