Police-constables Chapman and Mills were publicly thanked by the magistrate at Westminster Police Court recently for their courage and resource at a fire. Air. Francis, in handing them illuminated framed certificates and cheques, passed an encomium, upon the excellence of the London police force. Whenever assistance was required for the protection of life and property, said the magistrate, the first policeman appealed to was always ready for the emergency. The officers, Chap man and Mills, with conspicuous bravery, saved the life at a fire of an old man of seventy, using wetted handkerchiefs over their faces for the rescue, after being driven back by smoke and heat./
