CARPENTRY APPRENTICES.
i An interesting decision has just been ( given in the Arbitration Court in West Australia in regard to apprentices in the carpentry and joinery trades. It is set out that every apprentice shall submit himself to examination at the end of each twelve-monthly period. The examinations are to take place at the Technical School, Perth, and include theory and practice as applied in the art of carpentry and joinery in connection with building construction. The examinations will be conducted by the officers of the Technical School, who are to issue a certificate indicating proficiency and taking into consideration the term of apprenticeship served. Employers must allow apprentices to attend evening classes at the Technical School on two nights per week and pay the fees for same; and no apprentice is to be admitted as a journeyman unless he has obtained 75 per cent, of tie possible attendances and has passed the examination. It is lawful for the employer to withhold the increase in wages accruing to the apprentice in accordance with the schedule if he fails to satisfy the examiners.
