OBJECTIONABLE DEPOT.

PT. CHEVALIER'S PROTEST.

DETERMINED RESIDENTS.

Indicxation- still runs high in Point Chevalier on account of the sanitary depot which has been established in the district. Over fifty of the ratepayers signified to the Road Board that they would again turn out in force on Wednesday night to prevent the carts from reaching the depot. The members of the board had to exercise their influence to prevent a recurrence of the episode of the previous night. The ratepayers were informed that the board was taking action, and did not want any more disturbance in connection with the matter, and members advised the ratepayers to await the result of a conference with the health authorities.

A deputation, headed by Mr. T. Dignan (acting-chairman of the Point Chevalier Board) waited on the district health officer yesterday morning, to protest against the establishment of the depot in the district. The deputation was introduced by Mr. John Bollard, M.P., for Eden.

Mr. Dignan protested strongly against Point Chevalier being made a ••dumping ground" for other districts. He pointed out that Grey Lynn was able to provide a depot of its own, and he did not see why other districts should not be compelled to do likewise. If this plan were adopted only a small area in each district would be required, and the vehicles would thus avoid a long journey through thicklypopulated districts.

In reply, the district health officer stated that there had been a depot in Grey Lynn for many years without any protest being made. Moreover, it had never been a danger to the health of the community. I'inaHy, Dr. MakgiH promised to arrange a meeting between the residents and Dr Valmtine (Chief Health Officer) to-day. The following petition is being largely signed bv the residents of Point Chevalier : ' "To the Chairman and Members of the Point Chevalier Road Board,—The underresidents and ratepayers of Point Chevalier road district, view with indignation and alarm, the action of the Government Health Department, in establishing a sanitary depot on sections 28 and 29 of Block XXVIII., on the bank of Meola Creek. Ihe drainage of these sections falls into Meola Creek, the water from which is the drinking supply for a considerable number of milk cows, and from which creek large quantities of watercress are drawn Within a short radius stand the Mental Hospital, with its subsidiary build-! ings, the Wolfe Homo, the Point Chevalier public school, and a considerable number of dwellings. . . We cannot strongly enough condemn the establishment of this depot in the face of its surroundings, and ask the board to co-operate with us in getting it immediately closed, lest we have an epidemio in the present hot weather."
