i THE olliff BENEFIT. j AUCKLAND V. NOMADS. ] 1 BOTH SIDES SCORE WELL. ' ~~ ' i 'A KNOTT mat.-h to C. Olliff. the well- ; known representative bowler, who has . been compelled to give up cricket through 1 ill-health, was commenced at Eden Park | yesterday between an Auckland eleven , and the visiting New Zealand Nomads team. Beautiful weather prevailed for the match, and the play was of a very interesting nature. The game will be continued this marring, and a good attendance is expected. The Nomads won the toss and sent (Auckland into the held, Pomcroy and Hume opening to the bowling of Cummings and Doble.' Both batsmen quickly settled down and runs came fairly fast. Hume ■was the more aggressive, and the halfcentury soon appeared on the board. With the total at 71 Cummings got a good one past Pomeroy, and Hindmarsh filled the vacancy, only to see Hume caught off Boble two runs later. Hussey only scored two, but Hindmarsh and Butterworth put a different complexion on the game. Both scored very freely, especially Hindmarsh. and despite various changes at the bowling crease the score quickly mounted to 163, when a good catch sent JJutterwcrth back to the pavilion. Jacobeen helped Hii.dmarsh. to carry the total 40 199, when the latter was caught after a sound and attractive innings of 61. Jacobsen continued to bat nicely, and hit np 44 before bo had the misfortune to be run oat. Amongst the later batsmen Ark■wright scored 22, and the innings eventually closed (or 283. Doble was easily the best of the seven bowlers tried, securing the very .fair average oi five wickets for 97 runs. Horspool and Smeeton nude a fair start for the home team. At 44 the former was bowled after contributing half the lata!, and Smeeton and Wright added another 41 for the seotmd wicket. Gale went, in after Smeeton left, and although he opened quietly he quickly got his eyo in. He did not score so rapidly as usual, but was unbeaten with 60 to his credit whea stumps were drawn. Brooke-Smith gave a very lively display in compiling his 35, j V which included five fours.
