Briggg), when til ferring to the increased prices for beef and mutton, said that four months ago the necessity for making nn increase had been' seriously considered. Retailers, however, had postponed taking action in this direction as they were in hopes that as the? summer advanced the market would be-* come easier. But instead of that th-r, market became firmer, and as far as hfi could see meat would become still dearer, in ' the future. Tho position had been brought about, Mr- Briggs asserted, owin* to the big prices that .-exporters were offering for stock on the, farms,, and the scarcity of meat for local consumption would be further intensified with tho opening up of otatside markets. Quite recently, he said, 87s fid per 1001b was offered in the paddock for beef for export/. This gave some idea, of the keenness of the deman4 of' beef for the outside markets. ■■ - 4
