CHESS TOURNAMENT.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES. THE FIFTH ROUND. The fifth round of the chess championship was commenced yesterday with the' following results — Gyles v. Dodds (Ruy Lopez): On the 13th move Dodds exchanged a bishop for three pawns, and on the 25th move he gave up his other bishop for a pawn, thinking to win the "exchange" later, but in doing so be overlooked a fairly obvious reply. This left Gyles two pawns to the good, and Dodds resigned at the ' 51st move. 1 Moore v. James (Centre Gambit) : This game was very lively, both players attacking strongly. White secured black's queen for bishop and knight, and afterwards gave up his own queen for rook and bishop. This left white with rook and five pawns against knight and four pawns. He pressed his advantage, and James resigned on the 38th move. Davies v. Miles (Ginoco Piano-Hun-garian defence) : Both players opened cautiously. Miles instituted an attack whereby he won a pawn, and at the adjournment he held an advantage. On resuming at the evening session he failed to follow up his attack. On the 28th move Davies regained a pawn, u>d a little later gained another pawn with a strong centre, and pnissed his advantage home. Miles resigned at the 56th move. Severne v. Stewart (Four Knights Game) : Severne opened cautiously. Black won a pawn in the middle game. Queens and rooks were exchanged. Severne was outplayed in the ending, and resigned on the 54th move. Hicks v. Mason (Q.P. Game) : Hicks played well till the 23rd move, when be made a serious miscalculation, which ultimately brought about his downfall on the 49th move, _ Kelling v. Barnes (Ruy Lopez): A lively game. In the eliding Barnes was a rook down, but succeeded in drawing by perpetual check. The game, Grierson v. Myers, a Ruy Lopez, was unfinished.
