GISBORNE TIMBER AREAS.

INSPECTOR'S GOOD REPORT.

[BX IBLEQBAPH.--OWN COEHESPONDENS.] Gisboene, Wednesday. An inspection of the timber resources in a portion of the Tahora district, lying at the back of Rakauroa and Matawai, has' just been carried out by Mr. Jas. Brown. The inspection applied particularly to a block of East Coast native trust land and that of other properties in the neighbourhood.

Mr. Brown declares that a much more extended inspection is necessary to ascerj tain properly the extent of timber availj able, but from what he saw • there were ■ fully 5000 acres of splendid milling timber and much of it' as fine as "any to be seen lin the Motn district. There were, however, about 12 miles of difficult country to negotiate and the utilisation of the valuable bush depended entirely upon the feasibility ot obtaining more suitable access than" the present roads in from either Matawai' or Rakauroa. He was most favourably impressed with the excellent country in the Tahora Block, although between it and the railway there was a great deal of birch country. I Now that the station site on the Motu Railway has been located at Kowhai Road, |Mr.\T. Quirk, who holds the lease of a I large and valuable timber milling area adjoining, has decided to proceed with , the erection of a large and up-to-date sawmilling plant. It will have a capacity of 10,000 ft of sawn timber per day.
