THE TEMUKA ELECTORATE.
MEMBER PROBABLY RETIRING. [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Cheistchtjrch, Wednesday. It is stated that Mr. T. Buxton, M.P. for Temuka, will not be seeking re-election next year. The most likely candidate offering for the seat is Colonel J. T. M. Hayhurst, Reform candidate, who has served for some years on local bodies, is at present Mayor of the Borough of Temuka, and is a man who has done a great deal to forward the interests of his town and district.
The other prospective candidate is Mr. G. W. Arm tage, but it is not known definitely whether he will stand as a Reformer or as an Independent. It is stated, though without any substantial authority, that overtures have been made to Mr. Armitage to stand in the " Liberal " interest. Another " Liberal" candidate spoken of is Mr. D. Mclnnes, chairman of Mr. Buxton's late committee. Whoever stands as the " Liberal " candidate is almost certain to have -to face a split Mote since the LahouT Party in Temuka and other inland towns has made plain its intention to cut/ the painter with the old "Liberal" Party, whose candidates they have h'therto supported.
