AUSTRALIAN SITUATION
DETENTION OF STEAMERS.
WATERSIDERS' ATTITUDE. NO COAL FOR DOMINION. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received December 14. 8.5 a.m.) Sydney, December 14. Tho Ihumata, with timber from Hokitika. has been detained. Tho wharf labourers are still adhering to the policy of tho unionist conference, namely, to unload only those Union Company's vessels not trading to Now Zealand. Tho conferenco has adjourned till -Monday, pending definite information from Now Zealand. Mr. Grayndler, chairman of the conference, says that a cablegram of great importance is' expected from Now Zealand. Tho crew of tho Inga, which has arrived at Newcastle from Sydney, gave 24 hours' notice at Sydney, believing that the vessel was going to load Coal for New Zealand. Tho coal trimmers have refused to trim coal for tho same reason. The seamen, however, accepted the assurance that the Inga was not going to Now Zealand. She will probably go to Suva. The trimmers at Newcastle refine to trim the Kuirow, which'has arrived for coal for the Dominion.
In the opinion of the Employers* Federation, prompt; action should bo taken by the Government to restore shipping facilities between Now South Wales and New Zealand. A meeting of the federation on Thursday forwarded a resolution to Mr. Holman (Premier) stating that tho existing trouble had not originated here, that there was nothing at issue between New South Wales employers and tho wharf employees, and that the Government should take steps to restore tho facilities which were in suspense owing to the unwarranted action of certain employees connected with waterside work in this port. Tho Canada: Cape is moored in the stream, and the workers will be given another opportunity of working her on Monday.
