Two guineas have also been contributed by Messrs. A. G. Fell (Wei ; ington) and A. Gifford (Westport) jointly ; for a brilliancy prize. j Wei are glad, to be able to report that Mr. . O. ""tie. of Auckland, has once more conI sented to undertake, the onerous duties of umpire. The success of a tournament largely deponds on., the appointment of a. capable, | wise, and tactful umpire, and the association are to, be congratulated on Mr. Little having ! been induced to place his services at their . disposal. ' At . fi* ~ quarterly meeting of (he | association the question of issuing a book ! ot the Auckland Congress was discussed at | considerable length. The hon. secretary ex- ' P ir°i s -' i , re ?? t that the replies received from affiliated, clubs, indicated that the novelty of these books had worn off. and that the interest in them was clearly waning. The clubs had only undertaken to sell 71 copies on this ocasion, _as against the guarantee of 200 copies given a year ago. Several speakers 1 nrgod that a book should be published giving I the games without notes, so that a permanent record of the congress might be preserved. Others suggested the intermediate i course of publishing the scores with greatly curtailed notes. Mr. Fell finally moved: — , in *J* book of the forthcoming congress be published at a cost of £22. or thereabouts I provided that private subscriptions totalling I *10 are donated before the close of the conI gress. This was seconded by Mr. Hill and carried, unanimously. It was decided that competitors be invited at the prc-toumey meeting to contribute notes on their games 1 in order to assist the editor of the book. We understand that Mr. H. L. James. M.A.. of ! Wellington, has been asked to once more undertake the editorship, but has definitely 1 declined. No reason is stated, but we do not doubt that this decision has been brought about by the apparent want of appreciation of his work in the past. Although wo have sometimes had occasion to differ from Mr. James, and even to animadvert on his severe flagellations, we take this opportunity of j saying that for tho last three years he has performed the onerous task of editing these congress books, honoris causa, without any emolument, and , thereby has unfortunately incurred a certain amount of odium. That he should never make mistakes was, of course, impossible. One of his troubles was, in our opinion, that the task was too great for one man in the allotted lime. Another was that he expended too much energy and lime in resoarch for precedents in regard to the openings. But, 911 the whole, he performed the duties of critic thoroughly, fearlessly— one might even say quixotically—and well, and wa venture to say that the association will find it very difficult to replace him. Possibly Mr. James's reply is not final. He may be induced to reconsider the matter. If he would consent to resume the work in the capacity of general editor, and accept the assistance of a band of experts as assistanteditors, and temper justice with a little more mercy, we think he would be conferring a benefit on tho association and on the chess community in tho Dominion. Members of the Auckland Chess Club are requested to return their collcting cards, with sums collected, to the hon. treasurer. Mr. P. N. Stewart (c.o. Mr. F. W. Smith, grain merchant, Commerce Street), forthwith. All donations will bo acknowledged per this column. Tho Rev. C. E. Fox has cabled cancelling his entry.

The Melbourno Leader says:— best chess-players now come from that area of Europe that at one time constituted the kingdom of Poland. They may bo styled Russians, Germans, or Austrians—they really arc Polish Jews. A nitch has occurred in the arrangements for the proposed match between Messrs. Vincr and Wallace for the Australian championship, as the former stipulates for £20 lor expenses while in Sydney for a fortnight, and £1 a day afterwards. Mr. Wallace is only agreeable to allow actual hotel and travelling expenses. Mr. Wallaco also slates that ho is willing to refer the question to the N.S W. Chess Association. Tho fame of Mr. Arthur Mosoly, of Brisbane, as a problem composer is spreading. In a recent issue of the Pittsburg Leader his portrait, accompanied by a short biographical sketch, heads tho chess column. Specimens of his constructive skill are added. A selection of probloms by other leading composers follows, the whole covering four columns! Tho Leader devotes a good deal of space to' chess, and particularly to the problem art. Wo give ono of his prize-winners this week. In the ladder match, James v, Barnes, for rung 2 in tho Wellington C.C.. James wen tho second gamo, thus making tho scores j level. Tho third game is in progress. ]
