GIRLS' FRIENDLY SOCIETY.

WORK OF THE PAST YEAR. The annual meeting of the Girls' Friendly Society was held in St. Matthew's Hall last night. For the first time, the mooting was extended to members and their friends, and there was a large attendance of thoso interested. Archdeacon Calder presided. The report staled that the year had been marked by steady progress in all departments. Three new branches had been openod— Saints', Ponsonby; St. Peter's, Hamilton; and Holy Sepulchre, Kingsland. A branch had been sanctioned at the lodge, and was now ready to begin work, making a total of 21 branches, there were 161 working associates, 228 honorary associates. 610 members, 51 senior candidates, and 209 junior candidates. The largo number of junior candidates was ono of the most encouraging and hopeful features of the work. Thirty-seven members had been commended during the year. An arrangement had been entered into with the Government whereby the. society hod pledged itself to house girls arriving from overseas, in return for which the Government paid ilso per year for the accommodation of girls at the four chief centres of New Zealand. Notices and warnings to girls had been placod in 133 railway stations and on 12 boats, The report expressed regret at the resignation of Mrs. Butler from the position of honorary diocesan secretary} a position which she had held for five years, and expressions of thanks were tendered to Mrs. I'arkes, Mrs. Charter, the honorary solicitors and auditor, and others. The reports of the secretaries, of the various committees in connection with the society were satisfactory. Mrs. \7. 11. Parlies presented the report of the Lodge Committee, which stated that in 1918 there had been an average\of 23 permanent boarders per month, and 438 visitors had stayed at the lodgo. Tho lodge continued to mace steady progress under the able management of Mrs. Palmer. In tho clubroom 11,918 lunches hod been served. The insufficiency of the existing accommodation of the lodge was a sourc* of worry to the committee. The campaign fund amounted to £3500, and until the necessary additions could be made to the lodge a flat had been taken which would accommodate 18 girls. The balance-sheet showed that the receipts had been .£Bl fi3 3d, and that there was a balance, in the bank of £-20 12s 5/1. The lodge receipts had been £1333 IGs 4d, and on October 31 there was a credit balance of 437 5s 3d.
