SYNDICALISM REJECTED.

Syndicalism thrives only in an atmosphere of prejudice and unreason. It has been condemned by all responsible Labour leaders as a weapon of the boomerang type; its application has always been unsuccessful; whenever it has been considered by a body of workers calmly and deliberately it has been rejected. The special conference of British trades unionists to consider the Dublin strike resulted in a notable triumph for trades union principles and methods as opposed to syndicalist. By the large majority of 2,280,000 representative votes to 2015,000 the conference rejected the proposal for a sympathetic strike, and passed an all but unanimous resolution disapproving of the attacks mado on British unionist officials for their refusal to pander to the excitement and hysteria of the moment. It is typical of the unruly and unconstitutional methods of syndicalists that no service rendered to unionism is sufficient to protect from their attacks men who consider it their duty to

stand between their unions and the disaster in which the syndicalists would involve them. It h hardly necessary to go beyond the conference itself to see the difference in the methods employed by sane trades unionism and by syndicalism. On the one hand there was serious consideration of the issues involved, and on the other hand there was the heat, noise and personal offensiveness that centred round the utterances of Larkin, the advocate of syndicalism, whose license of language must have been anything but helpful to the syndicalists. -
