STRIVING AFTER PEACE.
MEXICAN LEADERS CONFER.
ELECTIONS NULLIFIED.
FOREIGNERS PROTECTED.
By Telcerach—Press Association—Ccrjyright,
(Received December 10. 20 p.m.) Mexico City, December 10. Congress has nullified the Presidential elections and fixed new elections for July.
Congress gave as its reason for nullifying the elections that less than one-quarter of the electors throughout Mexico voted. It is understood that the postponement of the new elections is due to General Huerta's suggestion. It is likely that General Huerta will now continue his present attitude towards the United States, an attitude that is based on the contention that he is the only possible Governor in Mexico, pending a new Presidential election.
Peace negotiations have been opened between General Huerta and General Carranza (the leader of the rebel party). The reason for this is to be sought in a quarrel between General Carranza and his chief lieutenant, General Villa. c
General Huerta has issued orders prohibiting interference with foreigners or their property during the fighting.
