RACECOURSE TRESPASSERS.

FINES IMPOSED.

Delay occurred in connection with the Police Court proceedings yesterday, owing to Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., being engaged on other business, and justices not being available. For the first hour Messrs. It. T. Michaels and P. J. Nerheny occupied tin Bench, Mr. Cutten then took a little of the business, and in the afternoon Messrs. C. H. Furness and P. J. Nerheny presided.

William Irvine Black and George Newman were both charged with trespassing on the Ellerslie racecourse on November 8, and refusing to leave when told to do so.

Mr. Singer appeared for Newman, and entered a plea, of guilty, but stated that his. client had "backed" a winning horse, and had gone back to collect his dividend. A fine of £5 and costs was imposed.

In the case of Black, Mr. Lundon said he had been in steady employment for more than a year. He had simply desired to see the big event of the day, and Jiad taken a seat by himself, far from the grandstand.

Sergeant-Detective Hollis stated that after being put off the course, the man had returned.

"With a knowledge that the fines are so heavy, you amateur bookmakers will go on," commented Mr. Cutteu, wher imposing a fine of £20 and costs in the case of Ambrose Flack, who pleaded guilty to betting on the Ellerslie racecourse on November 8. This sum, added the magistrate, was the minimum penalty. John Benjamin was charged that, being a bookmaker, he did bet upon the Taka°puna racecourse on November 29. An adjournment was granted until Tuesday next on the application of Mr. Hackett.

INSOBRIETY. Andrew Nelson and Owen McEvoy, each of whom had a previous conviction against him, were fined 5s and costs for drunkenness. Six first offenders were convicted and ordered to pay the costs. Another first-offender, a middle-aged woman, entered the dock in so stupified a condition that she was remanded for medical treatment.

MISCELLANEOUS. A navy man named William Patrick Day pleaded guilty to a charge of assault. The police stated that- the man assaulted was drunk, and had interfered with the accused at a coffee stall. Day told him to go away, and when he would not do so knocked him down. The accused stated that he had only pushed the man away. He was convicted and discharged, the Bench remarking Chat his officers could deal with him.

Pleading guilty to charges of having used obscene language and of absenting himself from .his ship, the Waiwera, a seaman named James O'Brien was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment, and was ordered to be placed on board his ship at the expiration of the term. The charge of leaving a vehicle standing in Ponsonby Road for a longer period than was reasonably necessary for the loading or unloading of the goods, was made against William Carr, who did not appear. According to the evidence of a constable the defendant bad left a dray loaded with manure, immediately outside (lie Newton police station, and had refused to take it away when asked to do so. A fine of 5s and costs 7s was imposed. Herbert Vivian Stabler, a young man. was charged with having obtained, by means of false pretences, goods valued at £1 15s Gd from John Swanson, at Ashburton, on November 29. Ho was remanded to Ashburton.
