The Northern Company's steamer Manaia will resume her Monday running from Auckland to Whangarei on December 22. The collier Kurow was taken alongside the Whaneape in the stream yesterday morning to take in bunker coal. THE SCHOONER FAIRBURN.- ~ The ' auxiliary ' schooner Fairbum arrived last evening from Napier, via Gisborne roadstead after ft very rough passage of; 12 days. The little vessel left Napier in ballast at 8 a.m. on Sunday, November 23, and met with strong westerly .winds to the East Cape. The weather then, became so-bad that Cap. tain McLellan doomed it advisable .not to attempt to round the cane, and the Fairburn returned to Gisborne roadstead for shelter. Sho made another attempt to round the cape some days later, but the heavy sea- which was running prevented any headway being made, and she cruised .up and down the coast for several days under easy canvas. The weather improved, considerably on Wednesday. 1 and the East Cane was- rounded ,in the evening. The Fairburn will load genera' cargo for Wairoa (Hawke's Bay).

STRANGER FROM NEWCASTLE. An unexpected arrival at Auckland yesterday morning was the Japaneso steamer Kwanto Maru, 5001: tons. Captain Holm, from Newcastle. The Kwanto. Maru anchored in the stream, and after undergoing medical inspection, was berthed at tho King's Wharf to discharge nearly 6000 tons of coal. The vessel was formerly ' known as the Wakool. of the Blue Anchor Lino, and is well known in Australian waters. She was only recently acquired by a Japanese firm. Tho vessel was built (it Sunderland in 1898 by the Sunderland Shipbuilding Company. Ltd. On completion of discharge, the Kwanto Maru will probably return to-New-castle to take up her original charter of conveying a cargo of coal to Java.
