MEN FOR WELLINGTON. A GENERAL ADVANCE. [BY TELEGRAPH — press ASSOCIATION.] Masterton, Sunday. A second contingent of nearly two hundred . mounted special constables was despatched from Wairarapa .to Wellington yesterday, and further contingents are preparing to go. MARTON'S CONTINGENT. ' MORE MEN AVAILABLE. [by telegraph.—press association.] Marton, Sunday. An enthusiastic crowd gave a hearty send-off to 40 special constables at ejght o'clock last night. , There was a little boo booing by some, but this was drowned by lusty cheers. Many more free labourers and special constables are expected to become available shortly. . RANGITIKEI FARMERS. . WILL NOT LET TRADE STOP. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] Wanoanui, Saturday. There is great, excitement in Rangitikei district concerning the strike, and both old and young are entering into the spirit of tiio appeal made to the farmers and labourers for support. Mr. C. R. Cooke, secretary of the Morton branch of the Farmers Union, has been kept busy enrolling special constables and labourers, and about 60 special constables left. for Wellington this evening to do duty. Plenty of free labour is available, and farmers are certainly most enthusiastic in the effort being made to defend the position from the farmers' standpoint. At the Rangitikei County Council meeting he'd at Marton to-day, special reference to the strike was made by Mr. R. K. Simpson, chairman of the council, and a resolution was carried inviting settlers to volunteer for special service, particularly in suppressing the lawlessness now rampant at Wellington. The motion con eluded:--"As farmers we express no opinion on the matter of the quarrel, nor do we desire to take either side, but the strikers must learn that whatever. their grievances are, we will not allow trade to be stopped and our business ruined.' " STRIKES CONDEMNED.; .ELTHAM FARMERS OFFER - SERVICES. [by telegraph.— ASSOCIATION'.] Eltham, Saturday. : A large meeting of farmers passed resolutions this afternoon with regard to the strike. A number of those present offered their, services as loaders and mounted special constables. The dairy company also passed a resolution, condemning the action of the watewidere in blocking trade/
and offering to do its utmost to persuade farmers to volunteer their personal service tcit protect free labour and handle produce.. A -numbef of volunteers are expected to leave for Wellington on Monday. HAWERA FARMERS UNITED. CONTINGENT LEAVES FOR - , WELLINGTON. [by TELEGRAPH.— press association.] Hawera, Saturday. A largely-attended meeting of farmers held at Hawera this afternoon under the auspices of the Farmers' Union unanimously resolved, "That this meeting of farmers enters a strong protest against the dislocation of trade by the strikes, and pledges itself to do all in its power to assist the authorities in carrying on the business of the country." A contingent of 25 men, with horses, left day for Wellington to act as special constables. Others ore offering their services/ " MEN FROM HAWEE'S BAY. A SHOAL OF APPLICATIONS. [DV TELRpRAPH. — ASSOCIATION' Napier, Sunday: ■ About 150 men left at 7.20 this morning by special train for Wellington. Numerous applications from men desiring to go have had to be rejected.'. The inspector of police received messages all day from men, and it is evident that hundreds could be sent to Wellington if required. DANNEVIRKE SENDS 20 MEN. 30 MORE NOW READY. (BY TELI'JGRAPII.PRESS ASSOCIATION.] : * •'•7 Dannevirke, Sunday. This morning over 20 men joined the special train here to proceed to Wellington to act as special constables and free labourers. Later in the day, a body of 30 men arrived at Dannovirke from Akitio district under Mr. Frank Armstrong, with the intention of proceeding to Wellington to assist against the strikers.
