The Evening Post (Wellington) states that ■ draughts match between the Wellington Wateftiders' '■ Club and the Workingmcn's* Club was played in the social hall of the latter club on Tuesday, the-9th inst. Mr. J. McNee (president) extended a very hearty welcome to the wateraiders, and voiced the general feeling of pleasure at the revival of this old-time fixture, whici somehow or other had been allowed to lapse some four or five years ago. Mr. Butler (hon. secretary of the wateraiders) responded on their behalf. A .closely-fought match, then ensued, the visitors. ultimately winning by the narrow margin of,two points. The score of the match is as follows:—Watersiders: Shadbolt i. Burgess' i, Butler 0, Manson 1, Goss 0. Dooley 1, Lambert li. Wilkinson i, Macklin 0, Cain 2, Casey 2, Willis i. Gyles, hon. secretary of the Westport Chess and Draughts Club, called recently at the Wellington Wormngmen's Club to ascertain if its draughts players would be willing to play a 10-aside match by correspondence with his club. He met several of the local, players, who took up the idea very enthusiastically,' and it is hoped (says the Post) to make a start with the "match at an early date. The Westport Draughts Club has long been noted as a strong one, and it was further strengthened recently by the transfer of Mr. Gardiner, the New Zealand .champion, from Gore to Westport.
